Each day in Africa the number of mothers who die in childbirth is equivalent to the number of seats in three jumbo jets.

If that's not evidence enough that something needs to be done to help improve the situation in sub-Saharan African countries, add the chances of a woman dying from treatable or preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth: 1 in 6.

In developed countries, that risk is 1 in 7300.

Our history

Mothers of Africa is a Medical Educational Charity that trains medical staff in Sub-Saharan Africa to care for mothers during pregnancy and childbirth.

After hearing a speech by Professor Martin Chobley in a medical conference in 2004, Professor Judith Hall, founder of Mothers of Africa decided to make a difference for mums in sub-Saharan Africa.
Since then, the charity has had projects with five sub-Saharan countries. These aim to educate staff and citizens, improve conditions for health and to help them to help themselves. We support building work which supports our projects.
Currently, we are building classrooms in Zambia, providing electrification to support health posts, and training midwives and doctors. We sponsor nurses training in Liberia. We're helping people to tell their own health stories: African messages can be shared and we can all learn from them.

Of course, it takes lots of people to do this. Find out about some of the people involved

Our Team

"The death toll from conditions is shocking and outrageous but basic improvements can make big differences in complex situations."

How to help

It's so easy to share the message that we're giving out. We've made it even easier for you and pre-populated a tweet and given you a direct 'like' button for our Facebook.

Donate — Help do something great

Even a small donation makes a big difference. We're working in countries where things that the Western world takes for granted aren't easily available. Mothers of Africa is changing that one donation at a time.
